Careers in Tourism, Hospitality and Aviation at Level 6
Strategic marketing, policy, technology and organisational performance in tourism and hospitality, for operators ready to think beyond the shift.
The fieldWhere degree-level work sits
Tourism and hospitality promotes from within more reliably than almost any other industry, and its general managers have often started at a reception desk or a pass. The flip side is that the industry's middle and senior grades increasingly look for something the floor cannot teach: an understanding of how destinations are planned and regulated, how technology is reshaping distribution and the guest relationship, how a brand is positioned in a crowded market, and how organisational behaviour drives performance in a labour-intensive business. That is degree-level content, and the diploma in this field delivers it to people who already know how the operation runs.
Roles that ordinarily ask for study at this level
- General manager or deputy general manager of a hotel, resort, venue or restaurant group
- Operations manager across several hospitality outlets or a multi-site food and beverage business
- Revenue, distribution or digital marketing manager in a hotel company or online travel business
- Destination or visitor economy officer in a local authority, tourist board or destination management organisation
- Tour operations or product manager in a tour operator or travel company
- Events, conference or venue manager where commercial and operational responsibility meet
The diplomaWhat Level 6 adds
The OTHM Tourism and Hospitality Management diploma pairs strategic marketing and organisational behaviour with tourism policy and planning, technology in the industry, tourism and international development, and a research unit specific to the sector. For an experienced operator the assignments are a chance to step back from the shift and analyse the business, the destination or the market they know, with a rigour the job has never allowed time for. Head-office and destination roles read that kind of work with interest.
For a career changer, perhaps from retail, events or the public sector, the diploma is a coherent map of an industry that is otherwise learned piecemeal, and a Level 6 credit that can support a top-up to a tourism, hospitality or business degree.
