The programmeWhat this diploma is

This Qualifi award is unusual on this site in two respects. It is smaller than most, at 90 credits, and its entry requirements presume a graduate: the specification asks for an undergraduate degree in a relevant curriculum subject and an IELTS Academic score of 6.0. It is therefore not a route to degree-level standing for someone without a degree, but a professional teaching qualification at Level 6 for someone who has one and has not yet been trained to teach.

Its three units follow the shape of a teacher-training programme in miniature. Principles of Teaching and Learning Theory and Practice supplies the foundation; Developing Evidence-Based Global Teaching Practice asks the learner to plan, teach and evaluate against research; and a Professional Placement puts the two to work in a school under observation. The word 'global' in the title reflects the award's design for international school contexts, in particular those where a local regulator requires a Level 6 teaching credential alongside a subject degree.

Applicants should read the extended diploma's page alongside this one. The two awards share these three units; the extended diploma adds four specialist units (Arabic, early years, moral education, SEND) and brings the total to 120 credits.

StructureUnits and credits

Three mandatory units; no optional units. Titles as published by Qualifi.2 Qualifi's specification gives the credit for each unit; the published total is shown in the particulars.

The units are sequential by design. Principles of Teaching and Learning Theory and Practice comes first and must be substantially complete before placement planning begins. Developing Evidence-Based Global Teaching Practice runs alongside the early weeks of the placement, so that lesson study and evidence gathering happen in a real classroom. The Professional Placement itself requires a school willing to host and a mentor within it; arranging the placement is the applicant's responsibility with LSPM's support, and it should be secured before registration.

AdmissionEntry requirements

Qualifi sets the entry criteria; LSPM applies them. As published:2

  • These qualifications are aimed at graduates and have been designed to be accessible without artificial barriers that restrict access and progression.
  • However, candidates must meet local regulatory requirements.
  • Entry to the qualification will be through centre application and interview.
  • Learners will be assessed on an individual basis.Candidates must have an undergraduate degree in a relevant curriculum subject.
  • They must also have attained IELTS Academic 6.0 (a minimum of 6 in reading and writing and 5.5 in speaking and listening).

Qualifi's requirements are specific and LSPM applies them as written: a bachelor's degree in a curriculum subject, IELTS Academic 6.0 with at least 6.0 in reading and writing and 5.5 in speaking and listening or an equivalent LSPM can verify, and an interview. Candidates must also meet whatever regulatory requirements apply where they intend to teach, which neither LSPM nor this site can waive. A degree in a non-curriculum subject is not usually acceptable for entry; if you are unsure whether yours qualifies, tell us the title at enquiry and we will give you a view before you apply.

If you are unsure which route applies to you, enquire and say so; working that out is what the advice call is for.

MethodHow you are assessed

The first two units are assessed by written assignment against Qualifi's criteria, including a critical review of theory, a sequence of evidence-based lesson plans, and an evaluation of taught lessons against pupil learning. The Professional Placement is assessed on a portfolio of practice: observed lessons, mentor reports, reflective commentary and evidence of professional conduct, all gathered over the placement period and moderated by LSPM before external verification.

The general arrangements for marking, moderation, feedback and resubmission are described on the how LSPM teaches page.

Time, honestly estimated

Qualifi does not publish a Total Qualification Time for this award; the figures below use the 90-credit convention of ten hours per credit as a planning guide, not a promise.

AfterwardsProgression

This is not, for most holders, a stepping stone to a bachelor's degree, since they hold one already. Its progression is professional: employment as a teacher in an international or independent school, and recognition by the relevant local authority where a Level 6 teaching credential is required alongside a degree. Whether a particular regulator recognises the award is that regulator's decision and should be confirmed before enrolment.

Holders wishing to deepen the qualification can transfer to the extended diploma by completing its four additional units. Those seeking postgraduate study in education generally apply on their existing degree, with this award as evidence of professional preparation.

The mechanics of advanced standing, and the questions admissions tutors ask, are on the top-up degrees page.4 Slot: universities holding a current progression agreement for this award, verified before publication.

Not everyone wants the bachelor's. The other direction from here is a Level 7 diploma, at master's level, described on the companion site for Level 7 diplomas.

FitWho it suits, and who it does not

A good fit if you

  • hold a degree in a curriculum subject and want a teaching credential without a full postgraduate teacher-training year;
  • intend to teach in an international or independent school, especially where a Level 6 teaching qualification is expected by the regulator;
  • can secure a placement school with a mentor and meet the English-language requirement.

A poor fit if you

  • do not hold a degree; this award requires one for entry and is not a route to degree-level standing;
  • want qualified teacher status in England; this award does not confer it and is not an approved route to it;
  • cannot arrange or attend a school placement, which is a mandatory unit.

QuestionsAsked about this programme

Why is this diploma only 90 credits?

Because it is a professional credential added to an existing degree, not a substitute for one. Its three units cover theory, evidence-based practice and placement. The extended diploma adds four specialist units and reaches 120 credits.

I have a degree but not in a school subject. Am I eligible?

Qualifi asks for a degree in a relevant curriculum subject. Degrees in fields commonly taught in schools qualify; others are judged case by case at LSPM's interview, and some will not. Give your degree title when you enquire and we will say how similar cases have gone.

Who arranges the placement?

You do, with LSPM's support. The school must agree to host you, provide a mentor and allow observation. LSPM supplies the placement handbook and mentor guidance and stays in contact with the school; registration is confirmed once the placement is agreed. We can tell you what kind of school has worked for previous applicants.

Is IELTS mandatory if I am a native English speaker?

Qualifi's specification states the IELTS requirement without an exemption. Where an applicant can evidence English-medium education to degree level, LSPM may seek the awarding body's confirmation that this satisfies it. Do not assume an exemption; ask.

Does the word 'global' mean the award is recognised everywhere?

No. It reflects the international school context the award was designed for. Recognition by any national or regional regulator is that regulator's decision, and you should confirm it in writing before enrolling if it is the reason for doing so.

Documents and application

Applications are made on London School of Planning and Management's own website, not this site; this site is LSPM's independent recruitment agent. Most people enquire first; the apply link is for those who have already had that conversation.
