The programmeWhat this diploma is

Qualifi's Health and Safety Management diploma is written for the person who is about to become responsible for safety across an organisation, rather than for a site or a task. Its six units describe that responsibility in full: Health and Safety Management Principles and Policy, Risk and Incident Management, Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture, Maintaining a Safe Workplace Environment, Health and Safety Law, Regulation and Influence, and Development of the Health and Safety Practitioner. Each unit is a piece of the job of a safety manager, and the last is about the manager themselves.

Ofqual number 610/2498/3 identifies it: a 120-credit award at RQF Level 6. Qualifi's specification publishes the credit total but not TQT or GLH figures, so the particulars table shows 'See specification' in those rows and this page uses ten hours per credit as a planning guide. It is a diploma, not a degree, and not a NEBOSH or IOSH award, though its holders commonly approach IOSH for a membership grade afterwards.

Compared with the other two safety awards here, this one has the widest entry: Qualifi admits on a Level 5 qualification or on appropriate work experience in the business sector with clear career goals. It is therefore the most accessible of the three for a manager coming to safety from another function, and also the most demanding in volume.

Health and Safety Management Principles and Policy and Health and Safety Law, Regulation and Influence belong together at the start, because a safety manager must know both what good practice looks like and what the law compels. Risk and Incident Management and Maintaining a Safe Workplace Environment form the technical core. Promoting a Positive Health and Safety Culture makes sense fifth, once learners can see how systems and behaviour interact, and Development of the Health and Safety Practitioner closes as a reflective unit on the learner's own professional growth. The delivered order is LSPM's; confirm it before enrolling.

AdmissionEntry requirements

Qualifi sets the entry criteria; LSPM applies them. As published:2

  • Level 5 qualification or:
  • appropriate work experience in the business sector and demonstrate ambition with clear career goals.

Qualifi's wording admits holders of a Level 5 qualification, in any field, on the certificate, and admits others on 'appropriate work experience in the business sector' with demonstrated ambition and clear career goals. For this diploma LSPM reads appropriate experience as responsibility that has included safety, whether as a designated role or as part of a wider management job: a site manager who owns the risk assessments, an HR manager who runs the safety committee, a facilities lead, a supervisor who has led incident investigations. A short written statement of goals and a conversation with LSPM's admissions team are how it is assessed. A prior safety certificate is welcome but is not required by Qualifi for this award.

If you are unsure which route applies to you, enquire and say so; working that out is what the advice call is for.

MethodHow you are assessed

Assignments are set by LSPM against Qualifi's assessment criteria. The briefs are organisational in scale: a policy and management-system review for a real employer, a risk and incident management framework with a worked investigation, a culture assessment and improvement plan, a workplace environment audit, a legal compliance analysis with recommendations on influencing senior management, and a professional development portfolio for the final unit. Learners in designated safety roles write about their own function; others write about the organisation they manage or a partner organisation by agreement with LSPM.

The general arrangements for marking, moderation, feedback and resubmission are described on the how LSPM teaches page.

Time, honestly estimated

Qualifi does not publish a Total Qualification Time for this award; the figures below use the 120-credit convention of ten hours per credit as a planning guide, not a promise.

AfterwardsProgression

Top-up destinations are bachelor's degrees in occupational safety and health, safety and environmental management, or risk management, entered at the final year with advanced standing; the 120 Level 6 credits and the direct subject match make this a strong case at universities that recognise Qualifi awards. Business degrees with a risk or operations emphasis are a secondary destination.

Professionally, IOSH membership grades are decided by IOSH against its current accreditation list and experience requirements. This page does not restate any recognition because it can change; applicants for whom a membership grade is the object should confirm with IOSH, quoting the Ofqual number, before enrolling. Employers in most sectors treat a Level 6 safety diploma as the practitioner and manager threshold.

The mechanics of advanced standing, and the questions admissions tutors ask, are on the top-up degrees page.4 Slot: universities holding a current progression agreement for this award, verified before publication.

Not everyone wants the bachelor's. The other direction from here is a Level 7 diploma, at master's level, described on the companion site for Level 7 diplomas.

FitWho it suits, and who it does not

A good fit if you

  • are taking, or preparing for, responsibility for health and safety across an organisation rather than a site;
  • come to safety from another management function and want the fullest grounding available at Level 6;
  • hold a Level 5 award in any subject, or substantial management experience that has included safety, and want 120 credits at Level 6 in the field.

A poor fit if you

  • want the shortest route to Level 6 standing in safety; the Qualifi Occupational Health and Safety Management diploma at 45 credits is faster;
  • need a NEBOSH diploma or a specific IOSH-accredited award named by your employer; check what is actually specified before choosing;
  • have never held any safety responsibility and have no Level 5 award; a Level 3 safety certificate is the sensible first step.

QuestionsAsked about this programme

Do I need a NEBOSH certificate to be admitted?

Not for this award. Qualifi admits on a Level 5 qualification or on appropriate business experience with clear goals. A prior safety certificate is helpful preparation and strengthens an experience-route application, but it is not required.

Which of the three safety diplomas should I choose?

This one if you want the fullest coverage and the widest entry. The Qualifi Occupational Health and Safety Management diploma if you want Level 6 standing quickly at 45 credits. The OTHM diploma if you hold a Level 3 safety certificate and prefer OTHM's framework once its figures are confirmed. All three are Ofqual-regulated at Level 6.

What is the Development of the Health and Safety Practitioner unit?

A reflective unit on you as a professional: your competence against a recognised framework, your continuing professional development, your ethical obligations and your influence in the organisation. It produces a portfolio and a development plan, and learners approaching IOSH membership find it maps well onto what the institution asks.

Is the law unit UK-specific?

It is framed on the law of Great Britain, with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act and its regulations at the centre, and it considers international standards such as ISO 45001. Learners elsewhere compare their own regime where the brief allows and the criteria can still be met.

How long does it take alongside a full-time job?

Qualifi does not publish a TQT for this award. Using ten hours per credit as a guide, 120 credits imply around 1,200 hours; over eighteen months that is about fifteen hours a week. Most working learners choose between twelve and twenty-four months, and the programme is arranged in one unit at a time to allow that.

Documents and application

Applications are made on London School of Planning and Management's own website, not this site; this site is LSPM's independent recruitment agent. Most people enquire first; the apply link is for those who have already had that conversation.
